The opportunity

EA Health is building dedicated OB/GYN hospitalist teams at two acute care hospitals in San Diego County, one in East County and one in North County. Both programs launch in fall 2026, and we are assembling the founding physician groups now.

These are true laborist roles. You cover in-house, you go home when the shift ends, and you carry no outpatient practice, no overhead, and no home call. Pay is a flat per-shift fee with no wRVU targets and no productivity formula.

We are hiring across the full range of commitment. Some physicians take one shift a month around an existing practice. Others are building toward near-full-time. PRN is welcome.

Compensation and coverage

• $5,000 per 24-hour in-house shift. A 12-hour shift is $2,500. The rate is set in advance and does not vary with volume or productivity.
• Professional liability coverage provided and paid through the program, including tail coverage.
• No clinic, no overhead, no home call, no wRVU targets. Flat per-shift pay.
• Independent contractor (1099). You are paid per shift worked.

Schedule and commitment

• 24-hour shifts run 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. Twelve-hour blocks are available at several sites.
• Minimum commitment is one shift per calendar month. Your monthly number is agreed in advance and adjusts by mutual agreement as your availability changes.
• Only shifts actually worked are paid. There is no penalty structure attached to the monthly number.
• Both campuses are scheduled independently, so physicians who want to work at both can do so without conflict.

Scope of practice

You will care for unassigned and emergent obstetric patients and unassigned emergent gynecology patients, plus patients whose attending physician or the hospital requests hospitalist coverage. Day to day that means:

• Labor and delivery management, including admission, labor management, vaginal and operative vaginal delivery, cesarean delivery, postpartum care, and obstetric complications.
• OB triage evaluation, EMTALA medical screening examinations, and stabilizing treatment.
• Emergency Department consults for obstetric and gynecologic emergencies, including first-trimester complications, ectopic pregnancy, ovarian torsion, tubo-ovarian abscess, and uterine bleeding.
• Urgent inpatient gynecology coverage, including consultation, surgical evaluation, and operative management within your privileges.
• Continuous on-site presence with documented handoffs at each transition of coverage.

Programs are run to current perinatal safety standards, with specific attention to treatment of severe maternal hypertension within 60 minutes of recognition, postpartum hemorrhage recognition and response, shoulder dystocia management, and NTSV cesarean rate reduction.

Qualifications

• Board certified or board eligible in Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG or AOBOG).
• Active, unrestricted California medical license (MD or DO), or eligible and in process.
• Current labor and delivery experience and comfort with full-scope obstetric and emergency gynecologic care.
• Current DEA registration.
• Eligible for medical staff appointment and clinical privileges in obstetrics, gynecologic surgery, and emergency department consultation.

What we handle

EA Health manages credentialing support, payer enrollment, malpractice placement, scheduling, and billing. We introduce you to the hospital medical staff office and track your application through to privileges. Your administrative load is close to zero.

Why now

Both programs are new. The physicians who join in this window shape the schedule, the coverage model, and the culture of the group rather than inheriting someone else’s. Shift lines are limited and are filling.
