Simulation Course Descriptions

Facilitators: Julianne DeMartino, MD and Eileen Reardon, MD
Train the trainer is a didactic and hands-on program developed to provide participants with the basic fundamentals of quality improvement initiatives through the creation of safety bundles, checklists, simulation and team building skills.

This program will be divided into three interactive segments. The first portion of this program will assist participants in developing quality improvement projects through the exploration of the major causes of maternal morbidity and mortality, establishing goals for improvement, obtaining buy in, using safety bundles, checklists and simulation to advance patient safety within the participants’ home institutions.

The second session will focus on effective team building strategies. Teamwork principles including leadership, situational awareness, mutual support and effective communication skills will be explored and practiced.

New to train the trainer is a presentation that focuses on strategies for remote education through the development of virtual simulation. This is a great opportunity for past and future simulation participants to get a behind the scenes look how SOGH developed their virtual simulation program. When used as a prerequisite to our obstetric emergency simulation course, participants are able to experience how these virtual simulations work in real time thereby reinforcing the educational experience.

OVD Facilitator: Tori O’Daniel, MD
(Vacuum Assisted)

  • Distinguish who is an appropriate candidate for VAVD
  • Empower physicians to safely use vacuum for delivery
  • Provide an ea
  • sy 5-step method to effectively and efficiently perform vacuum deliveries

This course will be a hands-on simulation for vacuum assisted vaginal delivery. It is a combination of pre-course material including a recorded power point lecture, and handout material, as well in person simulation and skills training to improve knowledge and comfort in the skill by the end of the session. The 5-step Vacca Method will be described for you prior to the session as well as during the simulation to further your understanding of this proven method.

In person we will walk you through, step by step, how to perform the 5-steps and then allow you to perform this skill. We will teach you how to recognize the correct ways and incorrect ways to perform a VAVD. Prepare to have great experience in comfortable environment where questions and active participation is highly encouraged.

Shoulder Dystocia Facilitator: Brook Thomson, MD
In this hands-on simulation course, participants will learn teamwork and effective communication strategies to prepare themselves and their units for a shoulder dystocia, perfect their personal technique for essential maneuvers to relieve shoulder dystocia and understand how to effectively debrief and document the event
